Q1. How do I modify my Cellsite file using Microsoft Excel?
A1. The Cellsite file is used to identify the active cell sites and sectors that you are currently monitoring. A specific name of up to 8 characters can be given to each cell/sector in your system. An example is 1st_St_A to describe the A sector of a cell site on 1st Street.

A default Cellsite file is stored in memory on your ZK product. This file can be used as a template to create a custom cellsite file to match your system. To access this file, power on your unit and from the configuration menu, select CDMA Cellsites. Select Export. This will create a copy of the default file in the Export folder on the compact flash card of your unit.

Remove the compact flash card from your unit and using the provided adapter, connect the card to your computer. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer to access the file. The Compact Flash card should appear as an additional drive on your computer.

The Cellsite.txt file will be found in the *:\ZK\Export directory on the compact flash card (where * is the drive letter assigned the card by your computer). Copy the file to a folder on your computer. The Cellsite file is limited to a maximum of 3000 Cell/Sector names. If your system is larger than this it is possible to create multiple Cellsite files for different areas of your system. As the Cellsite file must be named cellsite.txt, it is advisable to create different folders to identify the different files.

Open Microsoft Excel. From the File Menu, select Open. At the bottom of the OPEN window change “files of type” from “All Microsoft Office Excel Files” to “All Files”. Select the cellsite.txt file from the folder created on your hard drive.

A Text Import Wizard will appear. In Step 1, select “delimited”, select “Next”. From step 2, remove the check mark from “Tab” and select “comma”. Select next. From Step 3, select “Finish”.

The Cellsite file should now appear in ordered columns. Input the desired information in the applicable columns.

Required are:

Header Lines - Starting with @start and #’s.
cell names - 8 characters, no spaces or characters. Underscore and dash OK
latitude - Decimal format
longitude - Decimal format
Hyperband - c or p
Band - A or B (Cellular), A-F (PCS)
PN
End Line - @end

BIDs are not required.

The sample cellsite names and PN numbers should be removed.

Latitude and Longitude must be in decimal format. If it is required to convert from hours, minutes, seconds, a conversion tool can be found at http://www.geology.enr.state.nc.us/gis/latlon.html.

When finished editing the file in Excel, save the file as a comma delimited text file. From the “File” menu, select “Save As”. At the bottom of the “Save As” window, select “CSV (comma delimited)(*.csv)” from the “save as type” drop down box. Name the file cellsite.csv.

Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, rename the file as cellsite.txt. An error message will appear. Select “Yes” to continue with the renaming of the file.

Copy the new file to the \ZK\Import folder on the compact flash card from your unit. Place the compact flash card in your unit and power the unit on.

From the configuration menu select “CDMA Cellsites”. Select “Import”. The message “Import Completed” should appear.

Q2. I get an error when I try and Import my cell site file.
A2. This is most commonly caused by embedded white space in the file.  To insure that you have completely removed all while spaces, re-open the file in Excel. Using the “Search” tool, search for “<space>a, <space>b, etc. using all letters of the alphabet and the numbers 0-9. Repeat the process with a search for a<space>, b<space> etc. If a space is found, replace with an underscore (_) or remove the space.

Q3. I get an error that tells me that I cannot open my cellsite file, /zk/import/cellsite.txt
A3. The file name that you created may be incorrect. Check that the file is named “cellsite.txt”.  Also, the file that you created may have been placed in the wrong folder. Check that the file is in the /zk/import folder.

Q4. I get an error during import and it tells me that there are not enough fields.
A4. A comma may be missing in the file. Open the file in Excel and scroll down through all of the rows. Make sure that all information is in the correct columns.

Q5. Do I need to have service on my Motorola T725e phone for it to act as a BSIC scanner?
A5.  No, you do not need to insert an activated SIM card for the function to work.

Q6. How do I reset the QCP860 retriever phone to the factory defaults?
A6.  Press the following keys: INFO, PWR (outside 2 on the bottom) and END – this is the equivalent of ctrl, alt, del on a computer.

Q7. I get a warning screen when I open my Cellmap program.  What should I do?
A7.  The message you are getting is a warning to let you know that the version of the log data file (look at the @START line in your log file) is more recent than the cellmap version that you are using. For example, Cellmap version 6.1 was explicitly designed to import log file versions 6.1 and older. Newer 6.x version log files will also import when using the 6.1 version of Cellmap; however, new log fields and/or messages added after log version 6.1 will not be imported.

The message that you see is only a warning to let you know that you should check for an update of cellmap.

In the appendix of your DXMe user's manual you will find details on the log format.

Q8. I have the Data Testing function turned on; however, I don’t see any data on the screen.
A8. First, verify that the phone is configured in dual port mode. Second, verify that the cable that you are using is a dual port cable. If you are using the incorrect cable, then the autodial function will most likely not be working properly.

Q9.  How do I update the firmware on my ZK-SAM?
A9.  Go to http://www.zk.com/support/release_info.html to download the latest firmware, Install Instructions, Release Notes and Manual.

Q10.  My LG VX4400 does not autodial consistently, it seems to take 60 seconds for the SAM to initiate the first call.
A10.  Check the phone setting to be sure that your phone is in “dual-port” mode.  You can do this by following the procedure:

1) end -> menu -> 8 (settings) -> 6 (data settings) -> 2 (select port) -> "rs-232c" -> ok -> end
on same menu verify port speed = 115200 (this is the default, usually does not need to be changed)

2) end -> menu -> 0 -> 000000 -> 5 (data) -> 2 (Portmap data) -> select UART1 -> ok -> 3 (portmap diag) -> select uart 2 -> ok -> 4 (diag baud) -> select 115200 -> ok -> end

Q11.  My unit is set up to auto-start SAM-ALL and I get an error message “Unable to start new log file”.  My unit is in a constant re-boot mode.  How can I get back to the main menu?
A11.  In order to access the main menu when auto-start in enabled, press and hold the ESC button when the ZK Celltest Splash screen first appears.  Once you are at the main menu, you can reformat your CF card.

Q12.  For GSM technology, does the ZK-SAM collect the hopping sequence and how can I tell if my phone is in Hopping Mode?
A12.  Yes, the SAM will collect your hopping sequence and these channels are reported in our log file.  To detect if your phone is currently in hopping mode, we display the MAIO parameter in the Zoom line of the Display.

Q13.  Can I plug any phone into the ZK-SAM?
A13.  A list of supported phones is posted on the website under the "Release" section of the Support page.  If your phone is not listed, please contact us at   support@zk.com and we will review your request to add support for your specific phone.

Q14.  What happens to the log file if one of my phones fails or disconnects?
A14.  The log file will continue to record data for all good devices; however, the ZK-SAM will no longer record data from the phone has disconnected.

Q15.  Can I replace my Compact Flash Card?
A15.  Yes, we support almost all of the commercial grade Compact Flash Cards that are available up to 1GB.  You will need to first format the card on your desktop computer using the FAT file system.  If you would like suggestions on what specific larger 2GB cards we support, please contact us at  support@zk.com

Q16.  I have set my phone with an autodial configuration, but the phone is not making any calls.  What should I do?
A16.  Check make sure that you have the data testing option turned OFF.  The data testing feature will take priority over the voice calling scenario.

Q17.   How do I configure data testing?
A17.  first verify that you have purchased the data testing feature for your technology.  You can review the features that are enabled on your unit through the Features menu option.  (From the Main Menu select "Configuration", then select "Feature").

If you have the correct features enabled, then through the device set-up menu select the "Data Testing Setup" option.  You will need to enter the Link Layer information first - this is the user information that has been assigned to your mobile and will allow your phone to negotiate a link with your network.  Second, you will need to enter the FTP server information through the "FTP Setup" option.  Here you will need to enter the ip address and the username/password for your FTP server.  ZK Celltest does offer a data testing service in the event that you do not have easy access to one of your own.  Please contact us at   Sales@zk.com for information about his service.  Lastly, make sure that your three different test conditions are turned ON.  Once you enter the data collection mode, scroll through to the Data Testing screen and verify that you are able to connect to the network or the ftp server.

Q18.  I have data testing turned ON, but I donÕt see any throughput.
A18.  verify that you have each of the individual tests turned ON.  You are given the option to turn on FTP Download, FTP Upload, and HTTP Download independently.

Q19.  Can I perform voice testing and data testing simultaneously.
A19.  Yes, there are some 3G mobiles that will allow you to make a phone call during a data transfer session.  In this case, you can turn on your data testing feature and then you will need to make a manual phone call.

Q20.  How can I unlock new software features?
A20. If you are interested in upgrading the technology in your ZK-SAM, contact us at   Sales@zk.com with your request.  Once we have processed your order we will send you an unlock by email and you can upgrade your unit through the Features Menu option.  You will not need to un-install or send back your unit to us for the upgrade process.

Q21.  How do I turn on the field test test screens for my CDMA Motorola RAZR?
A21.
Press CLR
Enter 073887*
SPC: 000 000
Then Field Test mode -- Enable

The CLR - Left Soft Key is the toggle to turn the screens on/off.

Q22.  How do I enable my CDMA Motorola RAZR for data testing.
A22.  For certain earlier versions of the CDMA Motorola RAZR you will need to enable the dual-port USB communication to allow the phone to be used as tethered modem.  You can perform this process by following these steps:
Enable the debug screens on the phone.
#073887#
Turn on debug screens
enter the debug menu and scroll through the screens until you see the option for USB modem
select the USB modem and change this setting to "switched"
Exit the debug menus and connect your phone to the SAM
This phone setting will not be permanent and you will need to re-enable the dual port setting each time you wish to test your 1X or EVDO data throughput.

Q23.  Does the ZK-SAM have a trade-in value.
A23.  Yes, contact us at   sales@zk.com and we will discuss options that you have for upgrading your older hardware to the latest version.

Q24.  I have a suggestion on some new features for the SAM, how do I contact you with these ideas?
A24.  You can contact us at   support@zk.com and we will carefully consider your feedback.  We appreciate your feedback and to learn how you use the SAM to improve your network performance.

Q25. How much data can a CFC hold?
A25.  With Layer-3 turned on each phone will collect about 4MB per hour of data.  With a 1 GB Compact Flash card this will equal about 30 days worth of data collection.  If you have 2 phones plugged in, then you will have 15 days of data collection.

Q26.  Can I turn off the data recording?
A26.  The ZK-SAM will always collect data, there is no option to turn this feature OFF.  With our highly efficient log format, a compact flash card will have sufficient memory to hold a significant amount of data.  The files are stored on the Compact flash card with a timestamp, so you can easily locate the file that you are interested in viewing.  Once a CFC has become full, the unit will erase the oldest file on the card to make room for a new file; this will insure that you always have your latest log files available to you.

Q27.  Can I use any phone as a scanner phone?
A27.  Only special phones that have a custom software version will work as a scanner phone.  For GSM scanning, we support a scanner based on the Motorola K1 or V3 handset.  For CDMA IS-95 scanning, we support the Qualcomm Retriever phones.

Q28.  Can I test GSM and CDMA at the same time?
A28.  yes, the ZK-SAM is a versatile system monitor that is capable of looking at different technologies simultaneously.

Q29.  How can I replay the log file after the drive?
A29.  Your drive data has been captured to the compact flash card so that you can post-process the data once you have completed your drive.  We work with a variety of 3rd party providers for data analysis including, Actix, TTS, Xceed, and Quali-Pro.   Additionally, you can review the data using one of the three tools supplied by ZK Celltest.  For more information and a demonstration of our post-processing capability, please contact us at   Sales@zk.com.
